Before you start

Four things to have ready

  • Passport or NIE — a clear photo or PDF of the main page. A Spanish DNI is not valid for this plan.
  • Enrolment certificate — from your Spanish university or school, clearly showing your course start and end dates.
  • Payment method — a Spanish IBAN if you'll pay by direct debit; otherwise choose card or transfer and we send the details after.
  • An address in Spain — your university's address is fine if you don't have accommodation yet.
Fill everything in exactly as it appears in your passport — the application must match your travel document. If not, it could delay your application.
The process

From application to visa-ready certificate

Policy and payment choices

Start month (policies begin on the 1st, contractable up to 6 months ahead), duration of 3–14 months, payment method and optional supplements.

Your details and health declaration

Personal details as per passport, plus the five Sanitas health questions. Declare significant conditions honestly — we write your answers onto the official form in Spanish for you.

Documents and signature

Upload the student's passport/NIE and enrolment letter — we read them automatically and flag mismatches — then sign on screen. The signed official Sanitas application is generated instantly.

Acceptance, payment, certificate

We confirm eligibility, the applicable premium and any information Sanitas requires before the policy is issued. After acceptance and processed payment, your official Spanish certificate is issued for your visa file.

Don't leave the insurance until just before your consulate appointment — certificates are issued after acceptance and processed payment, so build a few working days into your visa timeline.
Students under 18

Under 18? A parent or guardian is the policyholder

If the student is 14–17, a parent, legal guardian or grandparent (over 18) takes out the policy as policyholder, and the student is added as the person insured. The application handles this automatically: enter the student's date of birth and the policyholder section appears, the adult's details and consents are captured separately, and the adult signs. Have the adult's passport or NIE details ready alongside the student's documents.

Official policy documents

Read the official documents before you apply

The application asks you to accept the plan's conditions — these are the insurer-issued documents themselves, published exactly as Sanitas issues them. Eligibility, premium and policy terms are confirmed before the policy is issued.

Frequently asked questions

Applying for Sanitas student insurance — FAQs

Around 10 minutes online if your passport and enrolment certificate are ready. Your quote details carry across automatically if you priced your policy first.
Yes — that is the normal order. The insurance certificate is part of your visa file, so you arrange the policy first and present the certificate at your consulate appointment.
On the first day of the month you select, contractable up to 6 months in advance. Consulate guidance normally expects cover from one month before your course start until fifteen days after it ends — we help align the insured period with your course and visa dates.
A parent, legal guardian or grandparent over 18 becomes the policyholder and signs; you are insured under the policy. The online application detects this from your date of birth and asks for the adult's details automatically.
You answer the five Sanitas health questions in English and we write your answers onto the official Spanish form for you. Declare significant conditions honestly — minor cleared-up illnesses don't need listing. We confirm eligibility, the applicable premium and any information Sanitas requires before the policy is issued.
Annual payment by credit card or bank transfer (discounted), or monthly by direct debit from a Spanish bank account in your name. We send payment details after your application — please don't pay before we confirm your application is accepted.
After your application is accepted and your payment has been processed. It is issued in Spanish, in the format consulates and universities are normally checked against — allow a few working days in your visa timeline.
No. Submitting the form does not create cover. Cover begins only once the application is accepted, payment is processed and the policy is confirmed with your start date.
