Student Health Insurance Spain Cost

Student health insurance in Spain is priced by a handful of factors you can actually reason about — age, where you'll live, how long you're staying, what the visa expects, and the extras you choose. Here's how the cost is built, so the number on your quote makes sense.

Visa-compliant student cover starts from €42.71/month
Age and province are the two biggest factors
Consulates expect the whole stay paid in advance
Sanitas — part of the Bupa Group since 1989
Access to thousands of hospitals, clinics and medical centres across Spain

The five factors

What actually sets the price

Your age

Student plans price by age band — younger students pay less. The dedicated student products cover ages 14–35; over 35, resident-type plans apply and cost more.

Where you'll live

Premiums vary by province. Most of Spain shares a base rate; Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and especially the Balearic Islands are priced higher.

Course length

Policies run 3–14 months and your total is months × monthly premium. A longer course doesn't change the monthly rate — it changes the total you pay up front.

Copay vs no-copay

Copay plans are cheaper per month for general healthcare, but visa routes normally expect no-copayment cover — so for a student visa, the no-copay basis is the realistic one to budget.

Optional supplements

Extras such as pharmacy reimbursement or accident cover add a few euros a month each. Useful, but never required for the visa.

Realistic budgets

What students actually budget

As the lead option for visa routes, the Sanitas International Students plan starts from €42.71 per month for the youngest band in most provinces, stepping up with age and in the higher-priced regions. In practice that puts a typical 9-month academic year roughly between €385 and €650 in total for most provinces and age bands — and up to about €1,050 in the most expensive, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera — with the exact figure for your details shown instantly by the calculator, which runs on the current official rate table.

Figures reference Sanitas first-year rates effective 01/04/2026 and are illustrative — the calculator always holds the current table, and eligibility, premium and policy terms are confirmed before the policy is issued.

Two budgeting rules save the most pain: budget the whole stay up front, because consulates normally require proof of advance payment for the full period; and don't budget around travel insurance — it is cheaper because it is not what the consulate is asking for, and applications relying on it are commonly sent back. The requirements guide has the detail.

Paying wisely

How payment choices change the cost

Annual payment attracts a discount and suits the consulate's proof-of-payment expectation. Monthly instalments exist but only by direct debit from a Spanish bank account in your name — most applicants don't have one before arriving, and month-to-month payment can be queried at the consulate anyway. A statutory 0.15% Consorcio surcharge applies to Spanish health policies and is included in quoted prices.

Because it covers much less — emergency-only care with excesses, not comprehensive healthcare. It is also generally rejected for student visa purposes, so the saving tends to cost an application.
For a visa application, normally not — consulates expect no-copayment cover. Copay plans can make sense for EU students who don't need a visa and want a lower monthly premium for occasional private care.
Normally yes for visa routes — consulates expect proof of advance payment for the full period. Annual payment is also discounted, which softens the up-front cost.
