Using your Sanitas student insurance in Spain
The certificate got you the visa. This page is about everything after that: the Mi Sanitas app in English, your digital card, booking doctors in the network, video consultations at three in the morning, and what zero copayments and no waiting periods actually feel like the first time you use them. We tell you what we know, and we flag what you should confirm in the app rather than take from a web page.
From accepted application to first appointment
Most guides to Spanish health insurance stop at the visa. Here is the part that matters once you land, in the order it happens.
Policy accepted, certificate issued
Your certificate — the document the consulate reads — is issued after your application is accepted and the payment is made. Eligibility, premium and policy terms are confirmed before the policy is issued.
Register for Mi Sanitas
Mi Sanitas is the Sanitas customer area — as an app and as a web portal at sanitas.es/misanitas. You register as a policyholder once your policy exists. The exact registration screens are Sanitas's to change, so follow the prompts in the app itself rather than a third-party walkthrough.
Your digital card
Your insurance card lives in the app. It is what identifies you as a Sanitas customer at network centres, so having the app set up before you first need a doctor is worth the ten minutes it takes.
Book — or open a video consultation
From there, day-to-day use is the app: book an appointment with a GP or specialist in the network, or open a Blua video consultation, available 24/7.
None of that requires Spanish. The app is fully available in English, which for most students is the single most practical fact on this page.
Mi Sanitas in English: card, appointments, results
Mi Sanitas is where the plan stops being a PDF and starts being usable. The three things a student reaches for most:
Blua: a doctor on video, 24 hours a day
Blua is the digital-health side of the plan: video consultations with doctors, available 24/7. For a student it solves a specific problem — the one where it is late, you are unwell, you are new to the city, and you do not yet know which door to knock on. A video consultation answers the first question, which is almost always "do I need to be seen in person, and how urgently?"
Used that way, Blua is triage you can reach from a student residence at any hour: it can settle whether something waits for a booked appointment tomorrow or needs urgent care tonight. For what to do when the answer is "urgent care tonight" — or when the situation is obviously an emergency and you should not be opening an app at all — read medical emergencies as a student in Spain, which covers 112, public urgencias and the private route side by side.
One thing we will not do is put a number on how quickly a video consultation connects. We have not verified one, so we are not publishing one. "Available 24/7" is the verified fact; anything more precise belongs to Sanitas, not to us.
Finding and booking a doctor
The plan works through the Sanitas network of hospitals, clinics and medical centres, and the app is the directory: search by speciality and location, then book. Two honest notes before you search.
Authorisation is worth understanding calmly rather than discovering anxiously: it is an administrative approval step for planned treatment, not a decision about whether you deserve care, and it does not apply to walking into a network GP appointment you booked through the app.
What "zero copayments" and "no waiting periods" mean in practice
Both terms appear on every page of this site. Here is what they translate to on an ordinary Tuesday.
Zero copayments means there is no per-visit fee for covered services. A GP visit, a specialist consultation, a diagnostic test within cover — none of them generates a charge at the desk. Your monthly premium is the cost; using the cover does not add to it. The service-by-service detail of what is covered lives on the coverage page, and the boundaries matter: prescription medicine you collect at a pharmacy, for instance, is not a covered service under the base plan — there is an optional pharmacy supplement at +€4.30/month that reimburses 50% of prescribed medicine up to €200 per year.
No waiting periods means the cover is usable from the first day of the policy. There is no initial months-long window in which parts of the cover are dormant. For a student this matters precisely because the risky period is the start: new city, new climate, new kitchen, and no idea yet where anything is. The plan also includes Dental 21, with more than 30 dental services included — so a broken filling in week three is a booking, not a budgeting crisis.
Neither term suspends the ordinary limits of the policy: cover applies to covered services, exclusions remain exclusions, and pre-existing conditions are subject to review at application. Cover varies by plan, so always check your particular policy details — or ask us for a plan that includes it.

This is a product page, so the discipline is different from our legal pages: every product statement above traces to the verified facts of the Sanitas International Students plan that we arrange as Sanitas agents, and anything we could not verify is flagged in place rather than papered over.
Using the cover day to day
As Sanitas International Experts, we arrange health insurance with Sanitas — one of Spain's largest private health insurers and part of the Bupa Group. Eligibility, premium and policy terms are confirmed before the policy is issued.
